Paving the way to our specialist support centre!

Charlie House is part of a network of very special organisations across the UK committed to helping every child living with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, and their families, get the very best care and support they can so they can make the most of every moment together.

We don’t think it is acceptable for families living in North-east Scotland to have to travel more than 100 miles from Aberdeen to get support, respite, and care when they need it. At Charlie House, our dream is to build a specialist care facility for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions right here in the North-east of Scotland.

To achieve that vision, we launched the Big Build Appeal in 2018 to raise £8million and we are now at the halfway point.

We have been blown away by the support we have received so far, but we can’t stop now because our centre is urgently needed by so many families across the North-east. That is why we remain undeterred by the disruption, challenges and setbacks caused by the pandemic and we continue to work hard to achieve our dream.

A parent supported by Charlie House told us what difference our specialist support centre would make to their family, “To have a place like Charlie House in the North-east would be fantastic, we currently have to travel to Kinross to access care and support for our son, there is no facility appropriate for his needs locally and it can be a real struggle to cope.”

Located on the grounds of Woodend Hospital Aberdeen, our state-of-the-art specialist care centre will dramatically change the support available to children and families in our community who need it most.

Speaking of our Big Build Appeal, Charlie House Chair and Founder Tracy Johnstone says, “More than 1,800 babies, children and young people across Grampian, Orkney and Shetland are waiting for our specialist care facility to open and, sadly, for some of them they won’t be able to wait much longer.”

Local businesses and professionals continue to support the build by donating services, time, and supplies to help build the Charlie House facility. It has taken a lot of hard work, research and planning to get to this point and we would like to thank everyone who is helping to make our dream come true.

Alongside Together for Short Lives we are acknowledging the action required at a local level to support and speak up for children living with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition and families. Like our colleagues across the sector, we want to help change lives and support families to create precious memories together.
