CSR in a Challenging Economic Environment

by Tracy Johnstone – Chair Board of Trustees Charlie House

Companies may be thinking that in the current economic climate in and around Aberdeen that they are unable to support local charities as much and maintain their CSR endeavours. Charities not only benefit from cash donations and fundraising efforts they benefit hugely from the generosity of local companies that are willing and able to donate gifts in kind eg services, equipment and volunteers.

Since we started out as a charity we have been very lucky to engage with small businesses across Aberdeen that have been able to support us with exactly what we need in order to keep our running costs down. Morven Mackenzie supported us with PR and advice when she had her company Mackenzie PR, this great support led to that continuing at Citrus:Mix with creative design, advice and assistance with our marketing. Printagraph support us with the printing of our brochures and other items and have a great relationship with the team there. A chance meeting with Graeme and Lynne Reid of Maritime Assurance Consultants Ltd brought about the possibility of Charlie House using spare office space within The Mackenzie Building as our base – we are still there into our third year and love being part of the MAC family. Our next step is to engage further with local companies to generate volunteering opportunities for their staff, helping at events, manning stalls at events and more.

There are so many ways to become more involved with a local charity in your community, you may have a favourite charity, so why not give a little back and gain a lot from donating a very precious commodity – your time.
